Useful Plants Nursery

Useful Plants Nursery is a small, permaculture-based nursery located in the Bellavia neighborhood of Earthaven and run by Chuck Marsh, an Earthaven co-founder and permaculture designer. Useful Plants Nursery specializes in useful, phytonutritional food and medicine plants well adapted to our southern Appalachian mountains and surrounding bioregions. Visit the Useful Plants Nursery Website.

I believe that growing your own food and medicine plants is a vitally important strategy and practice for regaining control over our collective and personal lives, our health, and our individual and bioregional economic well being. Our nursery is dedicated to putting these beliefs into practice and truly creating “Liberation through Abundance” as we serve your needs for healthy, useful landscape plants and work together to reweave the web of life. —Chuck Marsh

Nanking Cherries (Prunus tomentosa) are among the earliest ripening fruits in the landscape. Fruiting here in early June.

Elderberry (Sambucus canadensis) in bloom. Elderberry fruits are one of our best natural anti-virals with leaves, berries, flower, and root used medicinally.

Elderberry also has a long history of use in the Appalachians for making delicious wines, preserves, and tonics.

We grow a variety of large-fruited selections adaptable to the mountainous region of North Carolina.

Garden path lined with bottles.

Plants pictured are Sedum varieties, Balm of Gilead, Spiked Gayfeather (Liatris), Rosemary, and Dong Quai.

Rode Zeller Hazelnut pictured here in early summer. This is a very ornamental Hazelnut variety with burgundy new foliage and pink catkins and delicious, nutritious nuts.

Sea Buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) is a hardy, nitrogen-fixing shrub that produces small, bright orange fruits that are very high in Vitamins A, C, and E, and EFA's. Our best temperate-climate alternative to orange juice and more nutritious to boot.

Wineberries are a naturalized raspberry relative that produces delicious mid-summer red berries. An Earthaven favorite. Easy to grow and excellent bank stabilization.
