What is a CSA?

CSA is an acronym for Community Supported Agriculture, a system in which the customer buys a share of the farm and is therefore entitled to a portion of the harvest. There are many benefits to the CSA model, including deepened connections between the consumer, the farmers, and the land where the food is grown, while ensuring promised and sustainable livelihood for the farmers. In buying a “share” at the beginning of the season, the customer also takes on the risks inherent to growing food. These risks include extreme weather (drought, hail, etc.), crop loss due to pests, injury to the farmers, etc. Of course the farmers do all they can reasonably do to reduce these risks. Most CSA’s, including ours, provide a weekly selection of vegetables to the customer during the growing season.
